September 27, 2020: "Make a Ripple -- Make a Difference" https://youtu.be/yDArwrTnjc0

Our 6 Part Series, Sacred Earth, Sacred Work, drew to an end last Sunday with the focus on "Make a Ripple -- Make a Difference." Our scripture reading came from 1 John 4:7-21, which we read along with Brent, responsively. "God is love, and those who remain in love, remain in God, and God remains in them. This is how love has been perfected in us, so that we can have confidence .... because we are exactly the same as God is in this world.

And a Quote from Neale Donald Walsch (American author of the series Conversations with God): "Every individual undertaking, every individual thought, word or action leads to the transformation of the Self and to the liftin gof any other being , is of extraordinary importance. It is not necessary to move mountains to move mountains It is necessary only to move pebbles. We must become People of the Pebbles. We must do our work on a person-to-person basis. Then we shall move mountains. Then the mightiest obstacles shall crumble and the way shall be made clear."

Celebrating the Spirit moving in Diversity’

Sunday morning, once again we "Expanded our Attention" as a Call to Worship. We are becoming familiar with the chants that are interspersed throughout the service.

Gathered now in the mystery of this hour. Gathered now as one strong body.                                               Gatherned now in the struggle and the power. Spirit, draw near.

and... Breathe in the pain. Breathe on out the love.                                                                                          May my heart be the place where this world is changed forever.

Our scripture reading came from Isaiah 45:15-20 and it was accompanied with a quote from Max de Pree, American business man, "We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity.  We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing and inclusion."

It was great to have Tapas Sidker with us this morning who just returned from a 10-month stay in Bangladesh. Our tech team (PSALT) will benefit greatly by his return.

‘Seeing with the eyes that God sees us’

Fourth in the series of "Sacred Earth: Sacred Work", Rev. Peggy talked to us about the way God sees -- that it is through our eyes that God sees - that we are the eyes of God. Our task was to send her messages in which we proclaimed our gifts. Thank you to all who kept Rev. Peggy's mailbox full.

The second in our new series has reminded us that "It is through the work of spiritual practice that we move beyond fear into compassion and discover our deep and true selves. Engaging in spiritual practices draws us closer to the Creator and who we were created to be -- free and compassionate beings. Our challenge: to engage in one spiritual practice that draws you closer to your true essence and closer to compassion for others.

An exciting new series is underway at St. David's under the guidance of Rev. Peggy McDonagh. This morning we considered "Summer Swing Wisdom" and reheard the familiar story of the six days of creation as told by Brent and Rev. Peggy.

The Sanctuary Team consisted of Brent Tucker, Music Director, with five members from various St. David's choirs along with Deb Charnuski online from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario as host and David Layton and Brenda Wallace on Zoom duty from the sanctuary. As has become our habit, the conversation following service on Zoom was lively and filled with communal joy!

Sunday morning, we heard the story behind three favourite hymns, familiar to St. David's. We sang the hymns that originated from centuries ago to current and well-loved songs. Our guest speaker, Brent Tucker, was also our pianist so he was kept busy. Heather M. was our reader and all three of our choirs were part of the Sanctuary Team. Next Sunday, Rev. Peggy will be returning to the pulpit. Welcome back, dear friend.

Last Sunday morning, we were invited to try a new routine - that of listening to Brent on the organ at St. David's online while we read, viewed, reflected on our own --  all while the Sanctuary ZOOM team was taking a break. We have enjoyed a ZOOM Worship Service every Sunday morning beginning May 10, 2020.  Our last service together was close to the IDES of March. Check us out by clicking on the following link.

Dr. Richard and Diane (Bates) Christmas were our worship leaders this morning. The title of Richard's Reflection was derived from a poem written by William Wordsworth so many years ago. For the text of Richard's thoughts, return to the Home page and click on SERMONS on the top line.

Our guest pianist this morning was Garrett with Paula and Heather (Chamber/Angel Voices) helping the rest of us, sitting socially distanced in the sanctuary.

Sunday morning's Reflection was entitled "Teach Us How to Joy," and woven into the message of joyfulness and its importance in our lives, Rev. Debbie Stockdale read excerpts from two books:

Hide-and-Seek with God by Mary Anne Moore
Joy Is Our Banquet: Resources for Everyday Worship by Keri Wehlander
Our music selections were built around the concept of Joy. Even Brent's piano styling was joyful. Love the glissandos.
Readings this morning came from Isaiah 55: 10-12, Galatians 5: 22-23 - The Fruit of the Spirit and a poem written by Mary Oliver - Morning.
The Sanctuary Team this morning included among others Rev. Debbie, Brent, Deb, Heather, Kerry and Ruth. Kerry and Ruth put their 'joyful' masks on display for all of us to enjoy at home.

This morning Mike and Dianne Trew guided us through a very relevant and timely service of word, prayer and song. Scripture readings came from Matthew 22: 34-40, 1 Corinthians 12:13, 1 Samuel 16:7 and Job 12:7-10. As well, we were fortunate to have an anthem this morning with Heather, Garrett, Betsy and Scott, members of the Chamber Choir, under Brent's direction. Click the link above to view the service. Thanks again to the team in the sanctuary that made Zoom possible for you.

Rev. Debbie guided us through a reflection on "Sharing the Load" and how that kind of thinking helps us wend our way through the time of COVID-19. Her scripture selections came from Matthew 11: 28-30 and the thoughts of Ralph Milton and Richard Wagamese helped her frame her reflection.

The music, including a jazzy rendition of What a Friend We Have in Jesus and One More Step Around the World, added to her message. Click on this link https://youtu.be/9WhlDeuxCRE . You'll be glad you did.

Today's service marked the beginning of summer with Rev. Peggy's uplifting and joyous reflection entitled "Summer Wisdom." The mood was echoed in the sanctuary and on Zoom as members of our congregation greeted each other. Rev. Peggy begins her July holiday but the four Sundays of July will be covered by Rev. Debbie Stockdale, Mike and Diane Trew and Dr. Richard Christmas.

Rev. Peggy and the sanctuary team focussed their attention upon the combined recognition of Fathers' Day, National Indigenous Peoples' Day and the National Indigenous Day of Prayer. We were able to hear the words of Rev. Tony Snow and John Snow, Jr. as they related to the scripture readings from John 10:16; 1 Corinthians 12; and Romans 12:9-18.

Our prayers, litany and songs reflected our connection to Indigenous Peoples of Alberta and to the woven history of our people through the years.

Kerry, Ruth, Heather and Wendy were present to help Brent with the singing, Deb worked her magic on the computer and Rev. Peggy presided over the service. Thanks to all who joined us on line and to the warmth of communication following the service. It was particularly wonderful to have Jock M. join us, back home from nearly 13 weeks in hospital.

Please excuse the 10 minutes of silence during the service while technical difficulties stopped the transmission of sound. The text of what Rev. Tony Snow shared with us was part of his address to clergy earlier in the month.
